Patriots Defense Shows up Big in Super Bowl Rematch

-Ben Babcock

Probably one of the most anticipated games this season, the Super Bowl 51 rematch between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. This game turned out to be a very one-sided game with the Patriots winning 23-7. The Patriots controlled the entire game on both sides of the ball, this being the first time their defense has looked really great. They held the Falcons offense to a bit over 300 total yards and for the first time this season they held the opposing team to less than 300 yards passing, only allowing 233. It wasn’t just letting up fewer yards of scrimmage though, the Patriots defense made huge stops in the red zone, blocking a field goal early in the game and stopping the Atlanta offense on the one-yard line on fourth and goal. The Falcons only had one touchdown late in the fourth quarter and the Patriots got a little lucky with a missed field goal by Falcons kicker Matt Bryant, but that wouldn’t really have affected the game much.

We finally got to see that Patriots defense that New Englanders know and love. If they continue to improve like they have been and play the way they did tonight, there is a good chance we see another deep playoff run from them this year.
