Bears Free Agency; Did they get better?

Offseason Grade: B

Answer: Oh Yeah

The Bears look great right now! They improved where they needed to and have a good spot in the draft. The slump is over.

The problem with the Bears last year was that they had nobody to catch the ball. So what did they do? They went out and got the top receiver on the market in Allen Robinson, and Taylor Gabriel to play opposite of him. The only thing they did wrong here was letting Cameron Meredith walk. Meredith was their top receiver last year and if they had managed to keep him they’d have a very solid group. They also brought in tight end Trey Burton after losing Zach Miller to a gruesome injury last season. The Bears offense looks really good right now. Mitchell Trubisky is developing at quarterback, Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen have shown they’re a very efficient running back duo, and now they actually have a top receiver! The Bears are at the beginning of a new era, and with no Jay Cutler to screw it up.

They’ve got a young defense too that how shown some promise. They re-signed corner Kyle Fuller and signed Prince Amukamara. Fuller was the top guy last year and Amukamara has been a more than solid cornerback his entire career. Those two can lead this secondary, and then all they need is someone to step up at linebacker. They did sign linebacker Sam Acho and defensive ends Aaron Lynch and John Jenkins, so they added some depth up front but they someone to break out and really lead this defense.

I think that’s exactly what they do on draft night. They’ve got the no.8 spot and they’re gonna take the top linebacker Tremaine Edmunds. Edmunds could be the guy to lead this defense, I’d honestly be really surprised if they didn’t take it here. Then they could use someone at defensive tackle and depth at corner. After losing Meredith, I’d expect them to take a receiver later in the draft too, along with an offensive guard. But their most pressing needs are on defense. The only problem for the Bears is that their division is very strong. The Vikings came out of nowhere, the Packers still have Aaron Rodgers, and the Lions are middle of the pack. The Bears will really have to break out to make the playoffs this year. I don’t see them doing that, but they are definitely on the rise.
