Matt Carpenter and Cards’ Destroy Cubs

By: Nick Pooler

The Cardinals (49-47) defeated the Cubs (56-39) 18-5 Friday afternoon in Chicago. The big story of this game is Matt Carpenter. In just six innings, he was 5-5 with 3 home runs, 2 doubles and 7 RBI’s. This was unheard of with what he did. That is five extra base hits from Carpenter.

This is exactly what the Cardinals needed against a first place Cubs team. Especially how they did it against an all-star pitcher in Jon Lester. Tommy Pham added 3 hits and 3 RBI’s for St. Louis.

Jack Flaherty got the win on the mound going 5 innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 run, 4 walks and striking out 9. The two teams take the field again for game 3 of the 4 game series Saturday afternoon at 1:05 PM ET. Luke Weaver and Tyler Chatwood are the probables for tomorrows contest.
