Heading into the year, the Athletics were a team that many predicted to tank and then sell all of their assets at the deadline. Next thing you know, it is August 18th and they are tied with the defending World Series Champion Astros for first place. The thing that makes this so amazing is the people they are doing this with. This is the Athletics pitching rotation: Sean Manaea, Edwin Jackson, Brett Anderson, Trevor Cahill and Mike Fiers. This is without their best starter from last year, Andrew Triggs, who is on the 60-day disabled list.
What the A’s are doing is pure amazement. I want everyone reading this to take a moment and ask yourself how many people you truly knew were professional baseball players out of the Athletics starters: Matt Olson, Jed Lowrie, Marcus Semien, Matt Chapman, Khris Davis, Mark Canha, Stephen Piscotty, Jonathan Lucroy and Chad Pinder. Out of this whole roster, one player made the all-star team and that was 2B Jed Lowrie who made it in as a replacement. Davis is definitely leading their offense as he has 34 home runs with 95 RBI’s on the year. With not a single starter batting over .276, this A’s team has all the chemistry in the world. Out of their last 14 games, they are 11-3. This includes series wins over the Astros,
Mariners, Tigers and Angels.
It is going to be very interesting to see how this team does in the last month of the year and if they can hang on. They have plenty of chances to secure their spot as they have series against the Astros, Mariners and Yankees before years end. 3 teams they need to beat. Another amazing thing about this team is how at the deadline they remained quiet. They picked up three pitchers, Jeurys Familia and Fernando Rodney in the bullpen, and Mike Fiers in the rotation. Oh, and by the way, they have one of the best closers in baseball this year, Blake Treinen. Treinen is fifth in the majors in saves with 32 and has been very consistent all year. This should be an exciting finish to the end of the year and our media team will have much more on the wild card races the next couple of weeks.
