Bahamian Junior Rowers Win Gold and Bronze

Bahamian junior rowers, Andrew Bowe and Destiny Rolle, have made history by winning gold and bronze medals respectively at the inaugural America’s Cup Coastal Rowing Regatta in Lima, Peru.

The beach sprint event involved competitors running from the sand to their boats on the water, rowing for 500 metres, and then running back on the sand across the finish line. Bowe, a 12th grader at Blake Academy, won with a time of 2 minutes and 50.73 seconds, while Rolle, a student at LN Coakley High, won bronze with a time of 3:09. The event was sanctioned by World Rowing and Americas Rowing and saw competitors from South America, Central America, and the Caribbean.

The duo, coached by Michael Knowles and representing the Bahamas Rowing Federation, had previously placed fourth in the adult endurance event. Knowles expressed his pride in their achievement and hopes to send another national team to compete in the United Kingdom in October for the World’s Beach Rowing Finals.

The Bahamas Rowing Federation is also pushing for the sport to be included in the proposed Bahamas Games program in 2023.
