Bahamian Cyclists Gain Experience At Commonwealth Games

Lorin Sawyer and Felix Neely competed in the men’s road race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but they didn’t finish the 100-mile course. Both athletes were behind the peloton by over 10 minutes and were eliminated from the race.

Sawyer experienced mechanical problems with his bike and Neely got caught in a crash. Despite the disappointment, both saw it as a learning experience for their debut in a global competition. Sawyer, from Spanish Wells, said that the lack of experience in the Bahamas is a disadvantage compared to other countries.

Neely, who is only 19 years old, plans to regroup and compete in other races. The team manager and coach, Kenton Roker, believes that the cyclists need more exposure and sponsorship to compete at a higher level.

Chef de mission Roy Colebrooke also praised the athletes for doing their best under the circumstances and sees potential for them to be competitive in future events.
