The Bahamian national boxing team recently returned from the Sugar Bert Boxing WBC Tournament in Florida with an impressive haul of six medals – two gold and four silver.

The team, consisting of five members, exceeded all expectations with veteran amateur boxer Carl Hield leading the way with a gold and a silver. The team was coached by Jermaine Gibson and assisted by Bahamas Boxing Federation (BBF) President Vincent Strachan.

Despite Strachan’s appeal for funds from the Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Culture falling on deaf ears, the team persevered and achieved great success. Hield scored a victory over American Cameron Cleveland in his first match of the competition and went on to take down American Anthony Munoz in the semifinals and Ryan Maine in the final. Fifteen-year-old Keianno Greene defeated American Edwin Delgado in his gold medal match. The team was originally made up of 25 boxers, but that number had to be reduced to five due to a lack of funding received by the national federation.

The tournament was canceled in each of the last two years due to the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.
