Bahamian sailor Joshua Higgins, 19, is training in Portugal to compete in the ILCA 7 sailing class and qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Despite being from a family renowned for native sloop sailing, Higgins has chosen Olympic-style competition. He reports to training camp at 8-9.30am daily for a workout with coach Miguel Andrade, before returning for a 2-3 hour session after lunch. After sailing, the team analyses video footage and builds endurance with cycling. Higgins, the top-ranked Bahamian sailor, has won local events and finished third in the Dominican’s Olympic Regatta.

To qualify for the Olympics, he needs to place in the top 16 at the ISET Senior World Championships or get one of two Pan American Games spots. Portugal has become his second home, and he is in contact with his family in the Bahamas.

Higgins is competing in events across Europe, including the French Olympic Week in Hyeres, France, in April, and the YES Regatta in Germany in May.

Best of luck to Bahamian sailor Joshua Higgins as he strives to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris!
