From Berry Island to Clemson’s Track and Field Star

Wanya McCoy is a freshman track athlete at Clemson University who has made a significant impact in his short time on the team. Originally from Berry Island, Bahamas, McCoy grew up with a simple and fun childhood, swimming, riding bikes, and playing basketball. He started track during his senior year of high school. He received a scholarship offer from Clemson’s coach. McCoy chose Clemson because of its family environment, supportive advisors, professors, and teammates, and the buzz around campus.

McCoy attributes his success to his inner drive and competitiveness and listens to Michael Jackson, particularly “Can you feel it” by the Jackson 5, to get hyped before a race. He has already had an impressive indoor and outdoor season, winning the men’s track MVP at the ACC Championships and earning a spot in the national competition. He has competed in the 200-meter dash, 400 meter dash, and 4x400m relay, and will contest the 400 meters individually in the upcoming national competition.

Despite his individual success, McCoy sees track as a team sport and gives credit to his teammates for giving him a boost and more confidence. He loves competing for his country in national meets and representing Clemson’s orange and purple. With his team-oriented attitude and humble demeanor, McCoy is poised to leave a lasting legacy in Clemson’s track and field record book.
