Bahamian Boxers Hield And Williams Compete At World Championships

Carl Hield and Rashield Williams will be representing the Bahamas at the IBA World Boxing Championships from April 30 to May 14 in Uzbekistan.

Hield, who will be competing in his seventh appearance, is dedicating this fight to his deceased mother and hopes to improve on his previous round of 16 performance in 2015. Hield is currently training in Cuba and plans to reach the top four in the light middleweight division. The IBF is offering cash prizes of $200,000 for the gold medal, $100,000 for silver, and $50,000 for each bronze medalist.

Williams is back for his second time and competing in the welterweight category. Williams, who has a record of 7-2, is training in Florida with professional boxers but acknowledges the differences between amateur and professional boxing. Despite the challenge, Williams is motivated by the opportunity to win a share of the hefty prize money.

Both Hield and Williams connect well and have previously represented the Bahamas together at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Williams will return to the ring for his next pro fight on June 10 after the championships.
