Thrilling Victories and Rising Stars at BAAA 2023 Championships

The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) 2023 track and field championships brought big names to the Thomas A Robinson national stadium. Among the big names were two-time Olympian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, sprinter Anthonique Strachan, two-time Olympian Steven Gardiner, national record holder Keyshawn Strachan, Grand Bahama’s Donald Thomas, professional hurdler Devynne Charlton, and NCAA divison one javelin title holder Rhema Otabor.

Miller-Uibo in her return from pregnancy competed against her sister in the women’s heptathlon. Gardiner claimed victory in the 400m men’s finals to put on a show for the home crowd. A.Strachan left The Bahamas as a national double champion in the 100m and 200m finals. Otabor finished the women’s javelin with a personal best throw of 59.75m. Also, Charlton narrowly held off Charisma Taylor to the win the women’s 100m hurdles.

The junior double champions at the nationals were Adam Musgrove, Shatalya Dorsette, Melvinique Gibson, and Raywind Winder. North American, Central American, and Caribbean Championships  (NACAC) qualifier Musgrove earned gold in the 100m and 200m finals. Dorsette also did the same in both events with CARIFTA double gold medallist Jamiah Nabbie. Gibson collected wins in the under-20 girls 200m and 400m events. Winder finished the national championships with wins in the 800m and 1500m finals.

All sights are now set on the NACAC under-18 and under-23 championships set for July 21-23 in Costa Rica.
